Learning 3.0: From Analog to AI (and back again)
Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence by Max Tegmark introduces a framework for understanding the evolution of life and the transformative, potentially existential impact of artificial intelligence.
Published all the way back in 2017 before ChatGPT hit the streets, this best-selling book explores how AI could lead to a future where life can design both its own software and hardware.
Tegmark categorizes life into three stages based on its ability to evolve and upgrade:
Life 1.0 (Biological): Life where both hardware (body) and software (behaviors/skills) are evolved, not designed. Examples include bacteria.
Life 2.0 (Cultural): Life whose hardware is evolved, but whose software is largely designed by the life itself. Humans are Life 2.0 because we learn skills, languages, and behaviors during our lifetimes.
Life 3.0 (Technological): A future form of life that can design not only its software but also its hardware, breaking free from the constraints of biological evolution. This stage does not currently exist but could be created through AI.
Tegmark argues that AI advancement is driving humanity toward Life 3.0, potentially creating non-biological intelligence that could surpass human intelligence within this century. This may have seemed so futuristic in 2017, but less than 10 years later this is almost a foregone conclusion and a consensus among most top researchers in the field.
Tegmark argues that AI development is not just about technology, but the future of humanity. He advocates for a proactive, inclusive conversation on how to shape this technology.
So, what about Learning? How, like humanity itself, is it going to be impacted by an AI future…and what can we learn from how humans have responded in a short time to this new technology? Learning has gone from dialogue, to analog, and now AI. But, will we revert back to analog in an effort to keep learning human as long as possible?
That is the premise of my new book, LEARNING 3.0, set to release in Fall 2026.
Why Learning 3.0? Why Now?
You may be asking a lot of the same questions I’ve been researching and digging into the last four years.
Can AI help teachers reach more kids and create better learning experiences?
Will AI hurt or help the current traditional model of schooling?
Who is monitoring and researching the impact of this new technology on students, teachers, and the system as a whole?
What makes this different from every other “tech revolution” in education?
How can we harness a technology that is evolving so exponentially?
What happens when AI designs a task, the student uses AI to complete the task, and AI grades the task for the teacher? This very real scenario is happening already in classrooms around the world.
Many would say, let’s ban it.
Others would say, let’s use it for as much as we can.
But, just like Tegmark in Life 3.0, this book shares a perspective that we should acknowledge the risks, with "mindful optimism," encouraging people to decide what kind of future they want rather than merely fearing the risks.

The first step is simply showing up, and you already have by reading this far.
Over the coming months, I'll be pulling back the curtain on the messy, exhilarating, sometimes maddening process of writing a book about a technology that refuses to sit still.
By the time LEARNING 3.0 hits shelves in Fall 2026, the AI landscape will look different than it does today. That, in essence, is the whole point. This book isn't meant to be a snapshot of a moment. It's meant to be a compass of where learning is headed, and how we can direct it to the best of our ability.
Here's what you can expect as a reader on this journey with me:
Raw, honest updates. The chapters that aren't working. The research that surprised me. The interviews with teachers, students, and researchers that changed my thinking entirely.
Real stories from real classrooms. AI in education isn't theoretical anymore. It's happening in sixth-grade math classes in Texas, in rural schools in Wisconsin, in overcrowded urban districts trying to do more with less. I'll be bringing those stories to you as I find them.
Big questions, wrestled with openly. I don't have all the answers (and anyone who tells you they do is selling something). What I do have is a commitment to asking better questions, alongside you.
A community of fellow travelers. You're not alone in trying to figure this out. Educators, parents, administrators, and curious humans of all kinds are grappling with the same tensions. This newsletter is a space for all of us.
Tegmark ends Life 3.0 with this call to action: the future of intelligence is the most important conversation of our time, and it's too consequential to leave to a small group of technologists and policymakers.
I believe the same is true of learning. Education shapes everything. It impacts how we think, how we work, how we relate to one another. If AI is going to reshape education, then all of us as teachers, parents, students, researchers, (and yes, skeptics) need a seat at the table.
LEARNING 3.0 is my attempt to pull up more chairs.
